Looking for a beautiful villa on the Mediterranean to sip wine, look out over the glistening sea, and feast on some of the freshest seafood the Med has to offer? Look no further. Croatia has some of the most enthralling coastlines of the entire Mediterranean. With the charm of coastal Italy infused with elements of Greek and Slavic culture, you’ll be happy you hopped on that plane.
Split, Croatia
While the capital, Zagreb, is charming in itself, I can’t help but to recommend traveling to the coastline. While I won’t cover the entire country and incredible experiences such as Plitvice National Park and the enchanting coastal town of Dubrovnik, I will give you some insight on Split and Hvar. If it’s a cheap coastal town with loads of Roman history and beyond you’re looking for, head to Split.
Roman Ruins in Split
Located in the heart of Dalmatia (where everyone is it seems is at least 6 ft tall), you’ll find Roman ruins such as Diocletian’s Palace where the preserved ancient walls remain erect in this modern city. For eats, make sure you head down to the water front. Not far from the ancient remains, enjoy a fresh catch of the day, the sea bass is incredible and fresh (caught daily) but again, there’s so much more.
Hvar Day Trip from Split
Looking for a few excuses to make a day trip? You have a few options, but I would do both if possible. To start, do not miss the island of Hvar. Whether you’re on your younger side and looking for a wild party or perhaps you’re a couple looking for a romantic getaway, get to this charming island. The ferry takes just under 2 hours one way. Once you get to Hvar, look into renting a small boat for the day.
Island Hopping
If you have a boating license, this is as easy as making a quick deal on the docks with a rental agency or individual renter and there you have it, your personal boat for a very cheap deal (at least this was our experience). Don’t have you boating license? Don’t worry, there are plenty of smaller boats heading out daily to places like the Pakleni Islands or Jerolim Island.
If you like island hopping on crystal clear water and sipping cocktails on a warm, sunny Mediterranean beach, you’ve found your match. For the best day drinking, cocktail sipping location, don’t miss Laganini Bar and Restaurant located on the beautiful island Palmizana. You’ll find tree house lounges where you sip on cocktails with your friends or significant other and watch the sunset of the pristine bay. The food here is unreal too. Don’t miss this place.
In terms of lodging in Split or Hvar, you’ll find great deals on Airbnb. Don’t be afraid to look a little further outside of Split to the east. Some of the property only 10-15 minutes outside of town on the coastline is gorgeous. You can find incredible houses being rented out for very cheap. These villas also offer a gorgeous view of Split where you’ll experience bodacious sunsets (yep, I used that adjective).
